Woodstock was first established in 1844 and lies in the heart of McHenry County.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places the Woodstock Square is the crown jewel of downtown and host to many events, seasonal festivals and fairs. Brick-lined streets and 19th century architecture connect upscale shops, fine dining and live entertainment. The Square is also home to numerous banks, beauty salons, home improvement stores, copy center and a pharmacy for easy accessibility for everyday needs. And to experience what it is like to truly live in a charming community, one can come to town on Thursdays and Saturdays (May-Nov) to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and artisan wears at our bi-weekly Farmers Market.

Cultural and entertainment events stem from the downtown where you will find the historic Opera House built in 1889, offering plays concerts and performances throughout the year including the nationally renowned Woodstock Mozart Festival. The lush two-acre park in the Town Square is a place to enjoy fresh air festivals and concerts, especially on Wednesday nights in the Summer when the town gathers picnic-style to enjoy music together as a community. In the Old Court House built in 1857, there is an art gallery and the Chester Gould – Dick Tracy museum adding to the many activities available downtown. The Square is also home to the Woodstock Theatre, a classic movie house that has been updated and expanded to host five screens and show first run movies.
